This Month's Message

You sleep a third of the day, you work a third of the day, and you doing everything else during the remaining third of the day. When do you live, really live? What you are doing every waking moment can in some way contribute to what you want in your life. Why not create a business objective where you can get what you want and those  you employ can get what they want?

The objective for the business should include the vision, the spirit and the necessary action to achieve what you want in your business and your life. Begin by documenting your vision in clear, concise, unmistakable language so clear that members of your team will be able to focus on giving clients, customers, and vendors your very best products and services. If your business vision is clearly articulated, it will attract employees who share your vision. It will attract them because they will see an opportunity to get what they want in their life! Your best employees are getting much more than money by supporting your business vision.

Your actions, based on your vision, can create:  an environment in which ‘doing it’ is more important than not doing it; an environment where people feel valued for who they are and what they do; an environment where people care so much about what they do and how they do it, that nothing will stand in their way.

Systems are part of the environment of success. Your systems, based on your vision, create the foundation for success and for the development of your own potential. I encourage you to commit yourself to a system of procedures, practices, and processes which are designed to be effective in the implementation of your vision.

Seek the creative diversity of your people and empower them to make suggestions and innovations that improve the business process, products, and services you offer. Inspire them. Energize them to be imaginative and creative, and to become a part of the solutions to the challenge of making the company a great place to work. Expect a high level of commitment and participation. Create an environment that encourages each team member to synchronize with the meaning and substance of the vision. Encourage people to find more effective ways to deliver on the promise of the vision and to succeed at work accountabilities. No one knows how to improve a procedure or process more than the person doing the work.

Be inspirational. Always be moving toward your vision. Living is a sacred art, a path on which each step bears wisdom. Commit to learning what it is you don’t know to get what you want. Understand the spirit of your adventure.

How magnificent would your life be if you could get what you want in your business and your life?

The Enneagram is a model of human development that is based on nine personality types. It is said to be a consolidation of past works from mystical Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Taoism, Buddhism, and ancient Greek philosophy and traditions that stretch back into antiquity. It has been brought to a current understanding by experts such as Helen Palmer and Oscar Ichazo.

The Enneagram is a study of the ancient framework of spiritual development where the types are a set of one’s preoccupations with thought and emotion. Unique from other personality typing, this system requires you to self identify with a type rather than someone casting you into a type.

PalmerR17;s book is divided into 3 sections;

  • Introduction of the personality typing
  • A description of each type
  • A Directory of Relationships outlining how any given type is most likely to interact with any other type.

It is a terrific read and may inspire you to more fully investigate the system.

Client Corner

Jeff Morris
Western Commercial Services, LLC

Below is the text of a conversation with Jeff Morris about the results created from more than 10 years of business coaching.

Q: How long have you been in our coaching program?
In 1997, we began working with Tony Arnold. Since that time we have more than quadrupled our business, grown from 10 employees to 70, we went from one to three businesses, and changed facilities to accommodate our growth needs. In addition, our 10-year plan came to fruition last year.

Q: What caused you to seek out a business coach?
My wife and I had been listening to Michael Gerber’s E-Myth tapes and we then read the book, The E-Myth Revisited. We called for coaching and hit the jackpot when we got Tony as our coach. It was a difficult time for us, I was busy ‘doin’ it, doin’ it.’ Although I have a couple of degrees, including an MBA at Carnegie Mellon, I attribute much of where we are now to the coaching we have had. The program teaches you to hold employees accountable, helps you realize the importance of planning, and the Position Agreements and Systems are of tremendous value.

Q: What has surprised you about the coaching experience?
How successful it has been. We have been able to achieve all of our objectives. I remember Tony telling me 10 years ago, as we were going through the Strategic Objective, “You will be a dominant player in Vegas.” I replied, “Yeah, right.” Well guess, what? Tony was right, I now am a dominant player in Vegas.

Q: What has been the impact in your personal or professional life as a result of coaching?
Professionally: I was elected President of the BOD International Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning Association, which is the premier trade association for the kitchen exhaust cleaning industry.

Personally: I am able to spend time with my family- I’m not sure I would have done so if I had stayed in the Chief Technician mode of my business rather than in the Entrepreneur mode.

Q: What has been the impact of your relationships with your employees as a result of coaching?
Much better. Everyone is clear on what we want to achieve. Our Strategic Objective is clear to everyone. You could say- we are all singing out of the same songbook.

Let me share a story with you from an employee’s perspective. About 6 months after I had written our Strategic Objective, an employee told me, “After you came out with that piece of paper, everything has sky-rocketed and changed around here.” I really would not have expected this from him.

Q: Are there any obstacles that have been transformed as a result of your work?
Many. Michael Gerber states that you need to recognize that you are the leader; how you act is how your employees are going to act. This was a hard lesson for me to learn but I realized that I had to be aware of my actions. Any rules I give to my employees, I, too, must follow. This helped me clean up my act in certain areas.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to share?
Tony, our Success Code Coach, has been instrumental in our success. The program has been lots of work, but it really pays off. It’s hard at the beginning to see where this journey is going to take you. And it can be frustrating at times because the only immediate results you see is that you have less time because of all the work you are doing! However, 1-2 years down the road you can see results, and 10 years down the road you can REALLY see the results.

This program truly gives you what you want.
